The following is from Lord Carlton's daughter, a friend of the House of Deception: "Lord Leslie Carlton" was the world heavyweight wrestling champion of 1947, and was one of the most televised celebrity wrestlers in the 1950s, the golden age of wrestling. He headlined and sold out Madison Square Garden as well as countless other venues. Many know of Lord Carlton, the famous athlete, but few knew about Lord Carlton, the artist. At the age of ten, he was considered a child prodigy and given a scholarship to the San Francisco School of Fine Arts, now called the San Francisco Art Institute. Although he allowed his work to tour with "Celebrity Art" in the 1960's, his paintings were never sold during his lifetime. He had fame as an athlete and didn't pursue fame as an artist, instead choosing to raffle works off for charity on occasion. He gave paintings away to personal friends such as Mel Blanc (Looney Toons) and friends he had from TV shows such as "Barney Miller." There are many celebrities depicted in the collection of one hundred and twenty, including Lyle Alzado (the Raiders), Sammy Davis Jr., Marilyn Monroe, and Hulk Hogan. More history on the paintings includes rumor that they are haunted. Whether you believe in that sort of thing or not, anything from this collection seems to have a very heavy feel to it, so don't be surprised if [a Carlton] painting overshadows every other piece of art you have, and makes itself your favorite. Most of his work is not odd, in fact it is mostly old masters style, realism, portraits, landscape, etc. |
A showy wrestler of the early TV years, Lord Leslie Carlton appeared in his trademark cape and monocle followed by his faithful valet. He was a complex personality, a dedicated family man, a humanitarian, and ... a master painter. [author unknown] |
About the Artist Carlton was born in London later migrating to Canada and southern California. Considered a child prodigy, at ten years of age Carlton received a scholarship from the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco. A prolific and talented painter, he preferred to display his works to his friends though his exhibits included a four-month showing at the Museum of Science and Industry in Los Angeles and a national tour of paintings as part of the Celebrity Art Collection. Carlton won the Golden Gloves Award at an early age. In 1947 he won the World Championship Heavyweight Wrestling title. Though he enjoyed painting a variety of subjects, he preferred sports scenes and celebrity portraits. His works have been collected by many of his celebrity friends whom he met during many of his television appearances throughout his wrestling career. [author unknown] |
